INAR Research Infrastructure science meeting

7.–10.4.2025, Sotkamo, Finland

Plenary speakers

We are pleased to introduce our four plenary speakers, who will bring valuable insights to the meeting.

      Eeva-Stiina Tuittila

Eeva-Stiina Tuittila is a professor in Forest Soil Sciences at University of Eastern Finland since 2012. Her core expertise is in vegetation and carbon dynamics of peatland ecosystems. She is a pioneer in studying the impact of restoration on GHG dynamics. She leads the Peatland and soil ecology group at UEF with ca. 20 members.

Her plenary presentation will focus on:
Peatland restoration - A supreme tool for enhancing biodiversity and mitigating climate change?

      Katriina Kyllönen

Katriina Kyllönen is a Senior Scientist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute with over 20 years of expertise in air quality. She was one of the Finnish negotiators for the New Air Quality Directive. Her work is focused on air quality monitoring, quality assurance, research, legislation and public dissemination. As the coordinator of the national reference laboratory for air quality, she and the team ensure that regulatory air quality monitoring is conducted well and with high quality in Finland.

Her plenary presentation will focus on:
New Air Quality Directive in force – Implications for Finland and connection to infrastructures

      Anna-Maria Virkkala

Anna Virkkala is a research scientist at Woodwell Climate Research Center and at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki. Her research focuses on understanding carbon balance and its changes across the entire Arctic-boreal domain by integrating large synthesis datasets, remote sensing, and modeling approaches. She is also actively involved in research on vegetation shifts, microbial communities, and greenhouse gas monitoring in the Kilpisjärvi-Pallas area, and is the PI of a recently established Kilpisjärvi eddy covariance site.

Her plenary presentation will focus on:
Arctic-Boreal Carbon Budgets: Insights from Data Syntheses and Modeling

      Hannu Marttila

Hannu Marttila is an Associate Professor, holding tenure position and leading the Hydrology and Water Quality research group at Water, Energy and Environmental Research Unit in University of Oulu. Marttila's research focuses on hydrological processes and catchment management issues in northern landscapes with strong cross-disciplinary work across science fields. He has broad experience in various environmental engineering fields focusing on Nordic catchment hydrology and management, stable water isotopes, peatlands, land use and water quality issues, water protection issues and ecological connections.

His plenary presentation will focus on:
Digital Waters Flagship – DIWA
