THE KUUTAR GARDEN by JAKOB KUDSK STEENSEN  
Pre-event for press and professionals 17th of September 2026, Oulu, Finland 
 
Beneath the city of Oulu Jakob Kudsk Steensen’s site-specific installation The Kuutar Garden transforms the underground Kivisydän car park into a virtual world of botanical afterlife. Visitors enter an immersive world inspired by one of the planet's northernmost botanical gardens, the Botanical Garden of the University of Oulu. Here Kuutar, a figure known from Karelian-Finnish and Baltic Finnish folklore, becomes an architect of memory — part seed archive, part ecological system, part speculative future. 
 
Schedule subject to change, registered participants will be sent further information prior to the event. Please note that the pre-events have a limited capacity and places will be filled in the order of registration. Please register before 8th of September

08:15 – 10:00 Visit to Oulu University Botanical Garden (bus transfer from city centre)

Hosted by Head Gardener Tuomas Kauppila and Curator Anna Ruotsalainen  

Learn about ecological fieldwork behind Steensen's creation process and one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world. Since 2023 Steensen has been visiting Oulu's Botanical Gardens critically endangered species, exploring the unique seed vaults and archives, as well as learning about its specialist conservation research.

10:00 – 12:00 Opening event, Genelec lounge, Pekuri and Kivisydän car park
