Dr. Amy Hoch, licensed psychologist and certified school psychologist, the Associate Director of Rowan University’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center.
Complex trauma can be complicated to diagnosis and address therapeutically. Working with victims of complex trauma requires an understanding of the different domains affected by the event(s) and interventions that allow for adaptation and creativity. Many children and adolescents in the world have survived war/political unrest in their countries of origin and escaped to refugee camps or living arrangements in other countries. These survivors face culture shock; an inability to speak or understand the language; discrimination from the host country and other significant stressors. As helpers, we want to assist these children and families, yet how do we approach such work with often limited knowledge and resources?
This training day will first provide information on the assessment and treatment of complex trauma. Complex trauma and its application to refugees will then be addressed with specific focus on the barriers to treatment; challenges to trauma work in the therapy room; and vicarious trauma in professionals.
