Check-in Event
The new academic year is beginning – it is time to check in on Finnish student life!
The Check-in Event is a reception event for new international students and a part of their orientation. Both exchange students and students in international degree programmes can participate in the event. The participants tour the stands of different service providers in a fair-like environment while learning about student life in Helsinki.
The Check-in Event is organised 9 am–5 pm 26–27 August in the premises of the Language Centre of the University of Helsinki (at Fabianinkatu 26). A limited number of stands at the event is reserved for organisations operating under HYY.
For further information on the event, please contact HYY’s specialist in charge of international students, Tiia Niemi (tiia.niemi@hyy.fi, 050 543 9608). If you wish to know when different faculties will arrive at the event, please send email to Tiia.
Please note that only organisations operating under HYY can sign up for the event using this form! HYY only coordinates the participation of organisations operating under it for the event. Representatives of the University of Helsinki or any other parties cannot sign up for the event using this form.
Opening Carnival
It is time to celebrate the beginning of the academic year with the joyful and rhythmic Opening Carnival!
The Opening Carnival is an event that is open to all students at the University of Helsinki and features something to see and experience to suit all tastes! Participating organisations can showcase their activities at their stands in a way of their own choosing. Often, the Opening Carnival is a good place to sell overall badges, advertise fresher events, acquire new members and offer free merchandise, for instance. The carnival will feature various musical performances, martial arts and other entertainment.
The Opening Carnival is held on the City Centre campus 2–6 pm on 31 August. The event area includes several buildings on the campus as well as a separate outdoor area.
All parties showcasing their activities will get their own table (120 cm long, 60 cm wide and 74 cm high). We do not provide chairs for the stands. Electricity is not available for all stands. If you let us know that you need electricity, you will be placed in a location where getting electricity is possible. Separate extension cords are not available for all stands with electricity, but there will be at least one power outlet you can use near the stand.
If you have your own tent, we will generally place you in the outdoor area. Please note that you must have appropriate weights for your tent. Read more from Tukes’s guide on tents:
For further information on the event and accessibility in it, please contact HYY’s Specialist in Organisations Janne Saranpää (janne.saranpaa@hyy.fi, 050 537 3798). If you have a justified need for individual arrangements concerning facilities, chairs or other practical arrangements, please discuss the matter with Specialist in Organisations Janne Saranpää via email.
If you represent some other party than an organisation operating under HYY or the University of Helsinki and would like to participate in the event, please contact us by sending email to kulttuuri@hyy.fi. Participation in the event is subject to a fee for all other parties than organisations operating under HYY and parties from the University of Helsinki. Further information (in Finnish) on HYY partnership page.
The most fun adventure of student life awaits you – the largest event for new students in Finland will take over Helsinki once more!
In the Fresher Adventure, new students of the University of Helsinki compete against each other in a team contest held all around Helsinki. Checkpoints will be located in organisational premises, the University’s City Centre campus and the parks in the city. At the end of the adventure, the top three teams will be handsomely rewarded at the unforgettable afterparty!
The Fresher Adventure is organised on 17 September all around downtown Helsinki. The checkpoints are open from 4.00 to 8.00 pm.
Further information on the event and accessibility in it is available by email from fuksiseikkailu@hyy.fi.
If you represent some other party than an organisation operating under HYY or the University of Helsinki and would like to participate in the event, please contact us by sending email to fuksiseikkailu@hyy.fi.
