Check-in Event
The new academic year is beginning – it is time to check in on Finnish student life!
The Check-in Event is a reception event for new international students and a part of their orientation. Both exchange students and the students of international degree programmes can participate in the event. The participants tour the stands of different service providers in a fair-like environment while learning about student life in Helsinki.
The Check-in Event is organised 9 am–5 pm 27–28 August in the premises of the Language Centre of the University of Helsinki (at Fabianinkatu 26). A limited number of stands at the event is reserved for organisations operating under HYY.
For further information on the event, please contact HYY’s specialist in charge of international students, Tiia Niemi (tiia.niemi@hyy.fi, 050 543 9608). If you wish to know when different faculties will arrive at the event, please send email to Tiia.
Please note that only organisations operating under HYY can sign up for the event using this form!
Opening Carnival
It is time to celebrate the beginning of the academic year with the joyful and rhythmic Opening Carnival!
The Opening Carnival is an event that is open to all students of the University of Helsinki and features something to see and experience to suit all tastes! Organisations can showcase their activities at their own stands however they wish. Often, the Opening Carnival is a good place to sell overall badges and advertise fresher events, for instance. The carnival will feature various musical performances, martial arts and other entertainment.
The Opening Carnival is held on the City Centre campus 2–6 pm on 1 September. The event area includes several buildings on the campus as well as a separate outdoor area.
For further information on the event, please contact HYY’s Specialist in Organisations Janne Salokoski (janne.salokoski@hyy.fi, 050 537 3798). If your organisation has a justified need for individual arrangements concerning facilities, chairs or other practical arrangements, please discuss the matter with Specialist in Organisations Janne Salokoski via email.
Please note that only organisations operating under HYY and separately specified representatives of the University of Helsinki may sign up for the event using this form! If you represent some other party and would like to participate in the event, please contact HYY’s Producer Pia Blomstén (pia.blomsten@hyy.fi, 050 534 2963).
Fresher Adventure
The most fun adventure of student life awaits you – the largest event for new students in Finland will take over Helsinki once more!
In the Fresher Adventure, new students of the University of Helsinki compete against each other in a team contest held all around Helsinki. Checkpoints will be located in organisational premises, the University’s City Centre campus and the parks in the city. At the end of the adventure, the top three teams will be handsomely rewarded at the unforgettable afterparty!
The Fresher Adventure is organised on 24 September all around downtown Helsinki. The checkpoints are open from 4.00 to 8.00 pm.
For further information on the event, please contact HYY’s Producer Pia Blomstén (pia.blomsten@hyy.fi, 050 534 2963).

Checkpoint description
The maximum length of the checkpoint description is 160 characters, including spaces. The checkpoint description should be submitted using this form by 31 August. Please note that the checkpoint description will be published in the Fresher Adventure app as is. You can later edit the form through the ‘Edit your details’ link in the confirmation email.
For HYY to be able to place your checkpoint in the best possible location, we recommend planning your checkpoint in advance.
Please note that all checkpoints must fulfil the following requirements to make the Fresher Adventure as fair, smoothly functioning and fun as possible:
- The checkpoint task does not include alcohol or forcing or humiliating the participants.
- Instructions for the checkpoint task can be given and the task completed in around 10 minutes.
- The checkpoint has at least two spots for completing the task so that two teams can complete the task at the same time.
- The checkpoints are open from 4.00 to 8.00 pm.
- The checkpoint can also be completed in English.
- Checkpoint hosts are able to tally the teams’ points electronically (in other words, they have an internet connection and a smartphone, tablet or computer at their disposal).
